Anyone else use google earth? If so what do you use it for? And do you have any great links and files etc? What are your thoughts on Google Earth.
I have only just discovered it and i use it to plot and check helipads. I think it is great even though some images are 2 years out of date but it is updating on a regular basis.

I use it in my job as I am involved in regeneration. I particularly love looking round New York though I think it's amazing.

I use it to compare the size of swimming pools in Beverly Hills to the one I am going to build in my garden - we really need more outdoor swimming pools in the North of Scotland !

We use it here to show our datacentre locations for when customers are trying to find us - http://www.as31463.net/maps.php
Although we've got to add a new one to it now :-)
From what Andy was saying it's not too hard to use via the XML interface and Google have some good documentation on it.

For some reason Google Maps seems to be at a higher resolution than Google Earth.
I can see my house clearly on the Maps version but it looks blurry on Earth.

What exactly does Google Earth do?

Google Earth allows you to view towns and cities of the world from an aerial perspective. The images are real photographs taken by satellite with the ability to zoom in for further detail. Only a limited number of countries have viewable in this way.
Google Maps does exactly the same thing but is more user friendly in my opinion.

Google Earth is absolutely wondrous - do have a go with it. The way you can swirl from one place to another is breathtaking.
I use it personally to check out holiday destinations, look at my house, look at friends, give them a wave, take the kids to Mexico because they have been studying it, look at other places around the world.
I have also seen it used by estate agents quite effectively to illustrate locations of country homes.

You've already got one, it's called a typical Scottish summer!

Google earth is different from google map in that you can view the aerial shots from any angle in azimuth and longtitude.
You can view the earths contours on google earth where as google map you can only view from above.
Its is great when you want to fly an approach to a new helipad.

Google Earth is fantastic, i am soooo nosey, so love looking around different countries. If the images are clear enough, you can get down to finer detail and can even see cars in New York or the ques for the London Eye.
After several large glasses of wine, I once challenged a friend to 'find the football match' game.
We had to zoom in on football stadiums around the world (including baseball) to see if we could find images of a match in progress, we visited every stadium we could think of and they were all empty :o
Just a question though, I have never manged to spot a plane flying in the sky - has anyone else????

Have you had a look at Google map mashes? A good site to explore is http://googlemapsmania.blogspot.com/#collections where you can find a whole bunch, for instance a googlemap of all the speed cameras in the UK
http://spod.cx/speedcameras.html
The first site has loads of links including a Google Earth mashes link.
( There is a Helicopter site there already)

I have seen loads of planes just tick the airports option and go look. I have spent the last week plotting helipads and airports around the UK.

You need to get a helipad near Castleford. We already have freeport and excape (real snow slope etc). It said in the local paper this week, we are getting a big casino complex too, a 220 million pound project to go ahead in this area. We have also heard through the grape vine, a concert area too! Could be good business for you Taz if it all goes ahead.

Thanks Jayne
Please keep me posted and I will look in to it. There is a report out that discusses the need for more helipads and heliports throughout the uk.

Of cause it's a newspaper, it's famous up north. It comes second to the Yorkshire Post
I think it's a site called the paper boy and you can read all the papers from all over the UK for free.
Here found it http://www.thepaperboy.com/uk/
