I would like to share a little story. Its all about future marketing or as I said to client are you looking for Mr right or Mr right now.
As some of you are aware I marketed a Memory company that specialised in Mobile phone memory.
With in a month the website went to page one position one for what they sold "mobile phone memory".
The problem is he then wanted to target a product called "R4 card". No problem i got the website to page one for all terms related to this even "r4i ".
Then I got concerned when (as most SEO's do) while researching R4 I heard of a court case. This case was looking to ban this product.
Now as his places were very secure i decided to improve his positions on other product like memory cards and memory.
Problem is that the client needed a new website and after an amazing Xmas it should have been first on his agenda during the quiet period. his bounce rate was 60% and it was obvious the design that put people off.
Now here is the point of this thread.
R4 sales dropped (end of xmas)
Website looked poor
Client panicked started trying to push R4's which ever way he could.
As a marketing guy i explained his marketing should concentrate on his other products not just R4. This fell on deaf ears. He was then dropped as a client.
It was impossible to explain he was doing the wrong thing and he said i worked for him and should do as he asked.
Last month R4 cards were banned from use and import. They are now illegal.
Since i still have access to his analytics i can see he lost 90% of his traffic.
90% how bad is that. Why did this happen?
After he left us he employed a company who did what he wanted. instead of keeping heir eye on his bread and butter they concentrated on a fad. A fad comes and goes and you should never base your whole business on a short lived product.
I think the saying is don't put all your eggs into one basket.
Hope you learn from this.
