I find lots of places give you recipts that have marked on them "This is not a VAT receipt". They often still have the VAT separated out and have the VAT registration number on them.
Can I still claim back the VAt if I have one of these receipts. If not, what do I need to do?

Can you claim: No
What do you have to do: Get a VAT receipt! Ask the supplier

Hi Gareth
As David says you need to ask for a VAT receipt - its really common with petrol/diesel. If you just ask for the VAT receipt as well you'll get a second receipt showing the VAT. It becomes second nature after a while to ask for the VAT receipt each time.

The problem is more with on-line suppliers like BT, O2, Amazon. I always ask for a VAT receipt for fuel.
Is the supplier obliged to supply you with a VAT receipt if you ask?

If you are a VAT registered customer then you must be supplied with a VAT receipt by the supplier. This guidance probably explains it better than I can:

I've always received VAT invoices from BT, Amazon and my mobile provider so there shouldn't be a problem with those hopefully.
