Is there a WP plugin that will ask for an email addy to activate a download, with that addy going straight to MailChimp, (or aweber etc)?
Will this count as double opt in, or will Mailchimp have to confirm?

Their is a mailchimp plugin here
http://www.mailchimp.com/plugins/mailchimp-wordpress-plugin/
see how it works visit here: http://www.mailchimp.com/blog/
Thats the Mailchimp blog and you can subscribe there.
In regards to what you want to do. I suggest
Setup Mailchimp to automatically send a welcome email with the link to the download embedded only after they confirmed their email/subscription.
Otherwise you just have a bunch of fake email address.
Of course Mailchimp will need to send a confirmation otherwise how is it confirmed ;)

Yes thanks for that. Perhaps I'm being thick but that looks like a sign up form only, for the sidebar.
What I want isn't a Mailchimp sign up but a form which needs an email address to activate a download, (there will be several downloads), and then this captured email address to be added to a Mailchimp list.
The WP Email Capture plugin seems to fit the bill, but I was wondering if there was a more Mailchimp specific one, or if some kind soul could point a dim dog in the right direction on the Mailchimp site.
(BTW:I know you have to get confirmation, I was just wondering about the double opt in rules.)

When you say you WP EMail Capture does what you want. WP email Capture has exactly the same steps as I described but using Mailchimp.
The argument about activating a download - that isnt what WP EMail Capture does. It redirects you to a page of links. the process with wp-email-capture
1 you are presented a subscribe form
2 You enter Your name and email address
3 You get a page that says:
Thank You For Signing Up! (http://www.gospelrhys.co.uk/thank-you-for-signing-up)
Thank you for signing up to the newsletter. Please check your email for a confirmation link, please click on this to confirm your subscription. Thank you!
Please Check your spam filters, in case the email has ran off into that. If you’re still having problems signing up, please email me (http://www.gospelrhys.co.uk/contact-me).
4 in your inbox you get
Hello!
Thank you for signing up to The Gospel According To Rhys Newsletter. To complete sign up to the Gospel According To Rhys newsletter, please click on the link below:-

5. You click the link and you are confirmed and sent to the landing page

So its basically a newsletter subscription and the landing page offers the freebie. Nothing very clever in that.
You can replicate this exactly by having the Mailchimp form on your site, have them complete the exact same stages as above and have the downloads hosted on the thank you page they are directed to on confirmation of MailChimp subscription

If you want to know exactly who downloaded what and be sure links arent being passed around (although your files if any good will be passed around regardless) then what you can do is setup an automated message. So this first message they get after activating will include the file as an attachment. Technically more secure, but I do not like the idea of sending attachments around by email. In any case Aweber would limit you to 1MB file.
Hope its helped/clarified things a little :)

Great.
Thanks very much for all that. I'll work away at it in the morning.
