I have just finished zipping through the following and thought I would share these with you.
'Envisioning Information' by Edward Tufte
'Universal Principles of Design' by Lidwell et al (Rockport Press)
They are practical books like manuals. Lots of excellent references to further reading and very comprehensive coverage of principles. Quite a lot of it you may know or think already, but they are now compulsory reading for anyone doing any form of design in my organisation: from GUIs through database architecture to designing a new desk lamp.
'Universal Principles' has a lot of basics but fills in critical gaps. It is well researched and pulls together principles from a wide range of design disciplines. We are currently revisiting our commercial web applications from the ground up to ensure that we have solid design principles applied throughout.
Tufte's book is excellent for general display and organisation of data and so is also highly valuable for anyone writing reports, business cases, etc.
Hope they are as useful for your business as for they have been for our's.
