asked this question in another forum and was recommended to ask here. looking at the categories this is obviously related to my hobby/interest, but not sure if it is the best one? If mods move to a more appropriate one, many thanks!

so, my 'hobby' has now taken over and i would like to formalise what ive self taught and develop it into a career? ive searched for terms here first rather than asking the question 'how do i get into IT', and am hopefully looking for something a bit more specific, or maybe this role doesnt even exist!

OK my hobby - internet marketing, or affiliate marketing. basically looking for things people search for on the internet, and targetting sales towards that particular market. it involves learning seo - how to get to the top of google, and a whole manner of things to speak of here. for the record - very very addictive hobby!

Anyway reason im here asking is, i hear about seo experts employed by companies, not that i am aiming that high (just yet), but as business is becoming soooo digital, and rankings in the search engines are all what makes businesses visible, there surely must be a profession that deals with that.

i almost enrolled onto a foundation degree in business and e-commerce but alas funding was cut in 3 main local colleges and courses stopped. advised to consider a full degree, as i am a mature student (hmmm....), but waiting to see what is in the clearing.

where do i want to go?? im not sure but i really enjoy what im learning with internet marketing and am looking to gain formal qualification in some manner, as that seems to be at least putting you on level pegging job wise.

anyone work in this area? or in IT and could offer career guidance??

kind regards

Alan

Hi Alan,

It sounds like you've got the SEO bug, I'm one of the guys that does this for a living (in-house) and honestly, there is no accounting for experience in this world. Understanding the relationship between websites and search engines is something that can be learned but is better through experience - start with the basics, launch a couple of websites and practice your skills. Keep up to date with the technology and techniques - if you're trying to enter the world of commercial internet marketing as a career, a good working knowledge of the techniques is far more valuable to an employer than a degree - I would advise you to go through the Google Analytics certification programme (search google for Google analytics conversion university) which should be officially recognised by an employer, there is also a PPC certification programme - both are very low cost and worth every penny.
