I would just like to say hi,i used to do accounts at school, but never finished it, so now i've just started a book keeping course. At the moment i'm doing vat calculations and my heads done in, i've x 17.5 net amount, added 17.5, taken it away, changed batteries in calculator, and still come away with some mad total values, where can i find the right formula for this. now don't cringe, i'm only new
Anyway pleased to be here, i may learn a thing or two, cause i need to, all the best, spuder

Hi spuder,

i think you cn do like this

amount + vat = * 1.175

amount less that = / 1.175

hope that helps.

Hi jayne, yes it has been a while, but i use figures everyday, but this has got me foxed, i use the formula i was taught, net amount x 17.5, but when i finnish the invoice, or what ever, i find i'm not always right, i'm missing some thing, and i can't see the wood for the tree's, but i'll perserver

to find the vat in an amount I do VAT inclusive amont x 7/47. works ok for me. mind you, it will not work if the VAT rate gets changed in the future.

thank's for the warm wellcome everyone, i have now sorted my problem, belive it or not, after taking the cash discount, working out the vat, i was not putting it back at the bottom of the invoice, no wonder my sums were way off, i thought i was going mental, out of my head, then it dawned on me, really, about 5 o'clock in the mourning, shot out of bed, missus thought house on fire, it's great when a ray of light hit's you, and shines on you problem, at last my figure's all add up, once more i'm at peace, till i got back to bedroom, missus moaned like hell, but i was happy, anyway thanks once again folks :D
