This question's been touched on many times, and I may even have weighed in on it myself in the past - concerning top level domains and unavailable dot coms.

I'm doing some research for an information website. The site will be focusing on a specific niche area. The .com is taken and parked by a domain parking company. The org and net domains are available, as are the hyphenated versions. It's a hobby site, not an eCommerce or a business site.

Without naming the domain in question, consider it to be something along the lines of WelshArtists.com. Not Welsh, not artists, but you get the idea. The keywords most targetted would be 'Welsh Artists', which is why I'd want a domain containing those words, and preferably just those words.

In this situation, would you go with WelshArtists.org, Welsh-Artists.com, or something else entirely? As it's going to be more of a hobby site, I've no interest in approaching the domain squatters about the .com domain and paying any real money for it.

What would you choose in a situation like this?

For an international site, I would generally take exact match domains over hyphenated if .com, .net or .org was available

For UK sites, I'd avoid hyphenation if .co.uk or .org.uk was available.
