Having just set up for VAT registration and waiting to do our first return, I was wondering are you able to claim for the VAT on stock etc before we were registered ?

Yes, there's some useful information on the HMRC website (http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/vat/start/register/purchases-before.htm) which has full details of what you can and can't claim back - plus details of the records you need to keep.
