Getting adverts for my business into magazines, anyone know about how much discount to try for, so far have negotiated 40% but am after more, thats for a six month advert run.

Also would like people's opinions, full page advert ina magazine specific to your product, or 8 eight page adverts ina variety of magazines also aimed at target customers????

I would say it depends on the product. I recently had a full page editorial in the Agora magazine as it is a specialist interest magazine. If I was going in a more general mag though I'd probably only have a box ad.

I manage to get quite a bit of free advertising in my local paper, by offering a service. For instance the journalist is coming round tomorrow as I have offered to do a free mural in a childrens hospital. They will guarentee me a web address and a nice write up for that.

Good luck

And I forgot to say, if you have someone with writing talent who wants to add a story or article to www.freecybermag.com Chris may well sort you out with some discounted advertising.

If you read the mag closly you'll see my hubby writes and I get the adverts!

Local paper idea sounds good, will have a chat to them. I can write articles on cars if Chris wants them, will that get me a free advert?

I often manage to get 40% off just for a one-off - so I'd try for a bit more if you are commiting to 6 months.

Is the mag abc certified??

What's ABC certified mean?

Audit Bureau of Circulations
www.abc.org.uk

The mag may tell you it goes out to 10,000 people, but the only way to prove it is with ABC certification

Thanks for that, interstingly the one I'm keen on isn't listed but they have a shitload of them in the shops and says its highest circulation of any mag in its genre.

They might have a Sh£*^"ad in the shops but are they staying there or flying of the shelves?

40% is a good discount for a 6 month campaign. Advertisers in YEM rarely get discounts except in the case of block booking for 6 or 12 months - even then the discount is not as high as 40% - If you think you can get more, try but 40% is good.

With regards to being ABC - this is not the only auditing company - ask them if they are independently audited and if not, as them why - also ask for testimonials from other advertisers and check past issues to see whether other companies have re-advertised, or whether the ads are one offs!

Local paper idea sounds good, will have a chat to them. I can write articles on cars if Chris wants them, will that get me a free advert?

It wont automatically get you a free advert, but if you ask and say you will advertise on the basis that you get editorial space, you may be able to negotiate it. You may need to remember though, that the sales team are not the same as the editorial team - ensure that you get confirmation from someone in the editorial team, that your piece will be featured.

Hope this helps - by the way - what is it that you do?
