do these website that claim they will submit your website to all the search engines actually work or is it just a scam

Yes they are worth doing.

No, don't give them money. Google give you the opportunity to submit your site. The likelyhood is that they will pick it up anyway. Just have a link (or quite a few) out on the web, linking back to your website and the search engines will find it anyway.
I don't think it's worth paying someone to do this. Google, Yahoo and Bing should pick up the website quickly anyway if you have a link. By all means, go on Google and submit your site to them, this isn't necessary though.

The submission is a form of data capture. You then have the details of a new website owner.

It's all completely pointless - if you have a website, a couple of basic links to it should ensure it is indexed in Google, Yahoo, and Bing. "Search engine submission" is a throwback to the days when search engines could not be expected to index the web - ie, towards 15 years ago.

Just go direct to the engines, they should have a submit form somewhere.
And yes, submit services is just data capture - you don't really think they have some 'arrangement' with Google do you.....

except these 4000 engines are a heap of link dumps, probably connected to a network which will get you banned or set up to send junk mail to inboxes.

Free search engine submissions are totally a rip off, Hardly any other search engine will send you any traffic other than google, yahoo and MSN.. whats the point in submission to 1000's ?
Also google, yahoo and MSN will index you with just a few backlinks ..

I think you all are missing the point.
ITS FREE.
Google is looking at directories for its updates at present (hence the big balls up with maps).
What everyone is forgetting is DMOZ is a directory. Submitting to it is a positive step. (some of you newbies will think otherwise). Its free to submit to and when you do get listed you will find a positive effect to your ranking.
It is not the be all or end all for your website listings but to ignore its potential is idiotic.
If in the future google decides to change its algo to introduce directories as a must, how stupid would you feel that you didnt spend 20 mins doing it FOR FREE.
If you think it a waste of time dont do it yourself. But please dont advise others not to.

That statement's SO from the year 2002 :(
but its different now - VERY different as the others have caught up, deliver better results than the top 3 can, are more user-friendly and will have a significant following.
Then you have the vertical or niche engines ofcourse, and that doesn't include niche directories btw...
Searchers rarely stick to a single engine, some use upto 3 and even 4 engines. Don't forget engines like whatUseek, Excite, Lycos and the Meta search, also Dogpile, that gets a ton of traffic and return visitors.
This is 2010 mate, the new era of search for the web, and it will hit everyone like a tornado... I found about 3 new general engines yesterday alone, plus 2 people-search engines too, which are highly ranked by Google.

there's many more out there, many owned by large corporates and/or investors. All it takes is some cash and a great idea and Google can be beaten.

Come on Ali, its so tough to get in dmoz - how many are refused entry bcos some editor wants to keep his area free for his own website/s to stand out.
Forget dmoz, there's far superior engines out there, and proper resource websites too. They'll do you far more good than any dmoz listing will.
Dmoz is only full of webmasters looking for the next freebie :(

Let’s even try and analyse this why would you go tell the search engine that here is my content if it is so good.
The way I think is best to get the search engine to discover you is by placing your link on websites that they visit and from there, they will crawl your website and index you.
Well... that is my 2 cent
there are a few social bookmarking site you can use to grab the search engines attention.

Is that a question or a statement? You forget MSN was operating on the web years before Google came along.

Plus the crucial fact Microsoft are a technology and software leader, and likely the richest company in the world. They could buy Google a few times over, and still have change...... It's not just Microsoft they own, they bought other companies too.

don't forget Google probably won't sell anyway, its about power games, who has got the most etc, so it wouldn't happen anyway. Who knows what MS's plans are, they invented Bing, so thats their search side taken care of, all they need to do is make it better, which isn't the problem, the problem is Google's branding - NOT that Google's has a superior engine.

Directories will probably never rank again for anything competitive.
As for free it's not free the OP will then get bombarded with spam for ever or until every last one is blocked...
The amout of traffic from second and third tier engines/directories is not even worth thinking about.

I must add that Dmoz is a directory but when you look at the submissions that most of these services provide the usually include directories as well as search engines.

No, I did read the OP. as i first pointed out that getting free submissions is a way of these people capturing data.
I also pointed out that some of these websites submit to directories as well as search engines. (because most class portals and directories as a type of search engines the same thing).
Take a look your self. you will see it says search engine, but you will see some directories listed like dmoz. Anything else BUDDY.
