I find this worrying when people turn a bit of social fun, into a need. Its, almost like Facebook's a replacement to an active and fulfilling social life, and its an addiction, not in a good way either.
What happened to going out and making friends normally? Except now its not just a bit of Facebook interaction - for many its their life.
I'm an active console gamer, but I dont let it take over my life - there has to be a balance.

I don't see it as a "replacement to an active and fulfilling social life".
Most people are using it to communicate with 'real' friends or with strangers who share common interests (just like the way people use forums).
It's just another tool. I see it as the natural evolution of the Internet.

A business which is breaking even on 500 million users - very impressive?

There a great graphic comparing Facebook to other social networks on the BBC today:

It does make staying in touch with everyone really easy. I am yet to test its potential in terms of business however.

Interesting, looks like the creators of Friends Reunited sold to ITV and bailed at the right moment, thats nowhere. I think bebo got sold for a ton of cash and thats in gradual decline, all sites still have big numbers though!

...all sites still have big numbers though!
The thing that strikes me about that graphic is the massive growth Facebook has made in the last 12 months compared to the relatively modest growth Twitter has made in the same period.
If you believed what the much of mainstream press has been reposting in this period you would think that Facebook (being 'so last year') had be surpassed by Twitter (the 'next big thing')!.

I refused to join Facebook at first, only joined 18 months ago and glad I did. Met loads of school friends and keep updated / chat with friends in Australia and New Zealand.
I found Bejewelled last week as well ...

From memory, wasn't Friends Reuinited sold for something silly like $180 million?
And it's now worth a hell of a lot less!

Yes and look what has happened to Myspace since Rupert Murdoch spent $580m on it!
