Hello,

Sounds like a memory overload.

First of all:

Have you tried checking for spyware and virus problems?

I recommend Lavasoft Adaware Personal (free)- http://www.lavasoft.com/

and AVG free:

memory overload? never heard of that one before, sounds like explorer crashing to me.
Most likely something running in the background, as mentioned an AV/spyware scan wont go amiss, as will disabling unneeded startup programs (start/run/msconfig/startup). can you narrow it down to exactly when it happens, i.e. just after you open or close an app?
BTW if it does it, if you do a ctrl/alt/del task manager, then file/new task and put "explorer" minus quutes, it my get your desktop back (applies to 2k/xp)

All AVG did for my computer is tell me what viruses got in and then removed them. Zonealarm will stop most from getting in in the first place. If you create a restore point each day and this sort of thing happens you only need to use restore to get it the way it was when it was good. Warning though if you havent created a restore point in a long time. It will uninstall everything installed since then.
The restore options are in windows system tools dont wait till its too late.

It would be pointless to install brakes to your car after the crash.

What equipment do you have and what operating system? Have you installed any new software or hardware?

Make sure you are upto date with all your windows updates.

Do run the anti-spyware and virus stuff, run disk defrag and see what happens.

After that we'll think about hardware.

Thats what its supposed to do
Zonealarm will stop most from getting in in the first place
???, it depends on what version you have, not all versions have AV - and the ones that do will do exactly as any other - let you know you have a virus then offer to delete, clean,or quarantine the file(s).
Do not rely 100% on system restore, its fine when it works, but it all too often fails.
