XP / Vista - just run through the network setup wizard. Providing both computers have wireless adapters or wireless network cards?
Search the help section in your start up bar too on your pc :)

as far as i can tell this only gives access to shared folders, i want to be able to use programmes that may be on one computer but not the other - outlook for example, if thats possible

To access the prgrams on the other machine (unless they were specifically designed to be used across the network) you would need to access the desktop of that machine. Remote Desktop would be your best bet. Start/Run type MSTSC and enter the details for the other machine. Login and away you go.

...Obviously, with the pre-requisite of setting the relevant PCs to allow Remote Desktop connections :)

Wrong ( Remote Desktop connections )
The safest way would be to share the folders of the computer you want to retrieve the information from Google or pop over to the Microsoft site for sharing folders which will help you guide you through the process, or press F1 on your computer for help and follow the guide

This is one of the best ways to access the folders on another computer without needing to setup a network connection between Win XP and Vista which is a nightmare or you can use Team Viewer or another program like that.

The limitation are if a person using the other computer you will not be able to login ad the same time, plus this uses more resources on the machine you are remoter accessing.
The question was (giving full access from one to the other)
