Ive got a sponsored adword thingy on Google but obviously when my daily budgets gone that disappears - Im in the normal listings in about position 23, how do I get to the top - is it the number of visitors to my site or the number of click throughs from Google or something else entirely?
Sorry if thats a dopey question!
Sarah :)

Hi Sarah,
OK, the first thing I would suggest would be to correct the errors in your meta tags, eg
you have this on the front page
<meta name="promotional merchandise, promotional, pens, printed pens" content="corporate clothing, pens, uniforms, promotional merchandise, promotions, marketing, sales promotion, business gifts, promotional merchandise, bpma, client gifts, personalised, promotional merchandise, corporate clothing, promotional clothing, promotional merchandise, ink promotions, corporate gifts, lithographic printing, worldwide sourcing, unique gifts, bespoke items, promotional merchandise">
I think this is supposed to be your description tag but the name tag should read "description". You are also missing a few tags which would help.
Take a look at http://www.seochat.com/seo-tools/meta-tag-generator/
In addition I would add Alt tags to all the images to help 'describe' your site.
These are two basic steps, there is a lot more that can be done, what keywords are you wanting to appear on when a search is done on google?

Something else!
As a VERY rough guide - a search engine will analyse a page to see how many times a phrase occurs. Let's say for example:
Promotional Merchandise
Your page only contains the term once. I will ignore the tag that Crus pointed out for two reasons. Once, it's not a real tag(!) and secondly it contains keywords spam, ie. the same keywords/phrases over and over again.
Look at the page that ranks 1st on Google.co.uk - http://www.promotional-merchandise.org.uk. It contains the term in it's URL, once in it's page title (blue bar at the top), in the description, in the keywords, a few times in alt and title tags and it contains at least one of the words in the main body.
Google alos looks to see how many sites link to yours. Each link is like a "vote" for your site. Google also seems to think that ALOT of other pages link to it, whereas Google doesn't recognise any links to your site.
These are both very high level explanations!!!

I think Ive corrected the meta tag thingy on the updated version which Im launching tomorrow. Im not sure what Alt tags are though, never heard of that :? Basically when someone searched for Ink Promotions I'd like to be the first instead of being under a list of tattoo parlours!! and when promotional merchandise is searched Id like to be a lot further up as well
Thanks for your help :)

OK.
Change your title tag to something like:
Welcome to Ink Promotions: Promotional merchandise for your company.
Then, change your meta tags to this
meta name="keywords" content="your keywords here"
and
meta name="description" content="put a description of your company here. About 10-12 words is good"
alt tags live within img tags and it's that little yellow message that appears when you roll over an image (in IE). Something like:
img border="0" src="ink_logo.jpg" width="323" height="139" alt="Welcome to Ink Promotions"
That would be a reasonable starting place.

<h1>Ink Promotions</h1> would be useful on the page somewhere as well. Wherever you say Ink Promotions in big text.

The page title is important to tell people what you do, particularly I feel your company name is a little ambigous.
Before I visited your site I believed you sold ink cartridges.

Before I visited your site I believed you sold ink cartridges.
I did as well. In fact, I always thought that's what you did.

You know this, we know this but those searching for promotional merchandise may over look you if there is any doubt that they may waste a click by visiting your site, thereofre how your result appears on google is absolutely crucial to get that click even when your url says, "I sell ink"

The description on google does say promotional merchandise and incentives. Ive also updated all my tags etc.. as well - I just need to get bumped up the list a bit now - fingers crossed!
