I am a retailer on the high street with an online presence and also a eCommerce business owner. Having a website with goods on sale is easy and getting business on line is even tougher. There are many SEO and web designers who promise and, may or may not deliver.
Whether to DIY or ask someone to deliver was my question when faced with a similar situation 9 months ago.

I chose to start my own company and since then developed a software for my Photo industry and do web design and marketing.

To you I say there is no sure way- you need some IT chap or company who understands your business needs and goals works with you and arrive at your goals. These IT chaps are generally geeks with little commercial experience of selling the "real stuff". You need to be clear on what specifically you want to sell and they have to understand what to deliver then £500 or £5000 is money well spent.

There are many DIY tools in the market and unless you are of the inclination you will not achieve success. Leave it to the professionals.

Take a look at my website and see what we achieved in 9 months and we have not finished yet.
If you need help or quotation don't hesitate to contact me.

Interesting first post. Massive generalisation there. Welcome.

Why are the prices in (US?) dollars? Are you just re-routing to affiliates?

I put my site together myself, (yeah yeah, it shows..) except for the connection to World Pay which a "geek" did for me: his business, design and general good sense was invaluable.

Good luck,

I was refering to www.fotostation.co.uk which is my main business and sells goods and services. www.eshopforall.co.uk is being worked upon. The ePhoto application which we developed is live on that.
There is lot of merit in becoming an affliate to sell domain names. Its in $ because the target market is mainly US . Abosolutely nothing wrong in it.

Hmm - I'm not a geek, in fact I am from a sales background - I am not even male (shock horror!).

Good Luck - though I think your sales pitch may need tweeking slightly!

It might have been wise to spend a little time on here reading threads and generally seeing how the land lies before putting up such a post.

There are plenty of good SEO people in here, many of which have posted interesting and informative articles to help other members, and by making a general statement that most of them are just "geeks with little commercial experience" shows a lack of respect for people within your industry.

That's not exactly a textbook way to build trust and confidence.

Just my opinion.

Agreed. I work with several coders, web designers, marketing consultants who have all actually started out in one of those particular industries themselves.

In regards to doing it yourself, what do you think many of these companies have actually done?? A lot of them have been in the industry, know it inside out and now focus on SEO and marketing for that particular industry whilst promoting themselves as designers.

Not to question your own background, you certainly sound like you know exactly what you are doing but one high street business will differ tremendously from the other and it's the same with the SEO. Unless you are honestly a genius I dont understand how a DIY kit will give you the same specialised skill as an individual actually in the marketplace.

Again, just an opinion though

lol, just put "geek" into www.dictionary.com and it came back with... and I quote

"A carnival performer whose show consists of bizarre acts, such as biting the head off a live chicken"

I might be a web designer, but im definately not a geek

Does that mean Ozzy Osbourne is a geek then?
