View Full Version : Question about invoicing for ad hoc work

I am in the process of liquidating my company and have closed down VAT and final accounts are due to be posted soon, accountants have made it clear nothing more can be invoiced by the company etc.

However, I have been asked to do some ad hoc consultancy work (normally one hour at a time once every so often). Therefore, I need to invoice for 1 hours work but I don't know how exactly I should invoice. Obviously I am not VAT registered as an individual and my accountant is saying I can just invoice and put it on my tax return at the end of the year as it is more or less a one off thing.

Are there any templates for this sort of invoice (i.e. is there anything I legally need to put on it, such as my home address etc)? Can I literally just put "for 1 hours work on such and such date" and then the total?

Many thanks!

If you search on Google you'll find some sample invoices you can use/tailor.

Dont forget as a self employed person you'll need to register with HM Revenue & Customs when you commence.

Are you sure? My accountant said that as long as I don't have a proper contract and it is a small amount of work not to bother registering and just show it as income and expenses on 2011 tax return?

If you undertake self employed - yes you must register as self employed with HM Revenue & Customs.

Have a read here -

I'd also ask your accountant to confirm all advice given in writing if they havent already (its good practice for any tax advice).

MIcrosoft has invoice templates for Word. You find them by going to File New (not by clicking the New icon on the left). They include the fields you need. What you say above should be ok.
