Hi Guys,

Hope you can help, about 6 months ago i setup my own website which turned into more of a personal blog, it had no affiliation with businesses it revolved around my hobby,

Anyway after a few months of it being online it got quite alot of views and a friend recommended i sign up to this affiliate scheme which basically means i put a couple of adverts on my site to drive traffic to the product site and get % commission on each purchase.

At the time it seemed a good idea just to get a little extra to help out with the mortgage however now i'm wondering is this classed as business activity in the eyes of the law? and would i be required to pay tax on this?

I've had not signed up as self employed as i didnt think this would be classed as trading as im not actually selling or buying to resell, just advertising in a way.

The product is based in USA if that helps for the tax matters.

A conversation with a mate prompted me to ask,

If anyone would be kind enough to give me some advice i'd be greatful

Im sure legally you need to register if over a ceiratin amount, but there is no way on earth I would register as self employed for this.

How much would you say that you have made from it in the last year?

any income received should be declared on a self assessment along with the costs of generating said income.

In the view of HMRC - size is not important :p

Read here for who needs to complete a self assessment:
