Google are actually being investigated by the police for criminal activities with regard data theft.
Are people aware that while driving around, taking pohotos, those nice Google cars actually hacked every wireless network they could find took identifying information, and in fact have also taken data such as emails etc?
Google are DEEP in the crapola because of it.

I think they hacked my wifi. I can be logged out of google, disable customisation , delete internet history. If I then search for "plumbers" the local listings and SERPS are Birmingham related., how do they know I want Birmingham? I been hacked

That'd probably be by IP location.

Microsoft, 2010, by implementing the EU mandated browser choice screen (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/02/19/microsoft_browser_screen/) in its Windows operating system.

that is a document released by Google that clearly shows they were using a packet sniffer while driving around, and it is this that the metropolitan police are investigating.

Definitely IP Location. It's not always that accurate. For instance if you work for a large company your IP could be attributed to their head office rather than the office you work at.

That was an interesting read, thanks.
What do you think was the intention of this? To gather trends on browsing habits albeit a very short snapshot, but if you do it to the whole country i'm sure they could mesh it together quite well. I thought a possible security analysis but there would be no need to record unencrypted frames for that, just count them.
I'm not surprised they are in trouble, they are covertly and unnecessarily collecting data for whatever reason which if leaked could be a major security issue. There are plenty of people who would like to know exactly where to go to listen to unencrypted internet traffic.

Maybe they should change this.
