View Full Version : Business Directory Template?

HI.

Can anyone advise on a free website template/program to set up a Business Directory?

There are thousands of templates for other things such as blogs, shops etc.

I am not intending to profit from it (except cover expenses if possible). I work (happily) full-time on an 'average' salary, but wanted to do something internet-related as a hobby, and hopefully build gradually.

Its only going to be for local businesses, and will be free to list. A few Google Ads will be placed at the side to generate any income (not essential).

I am PC literate, but I do not think it requires extensive website skills to create this, or does it?

Thank You.

Google

phplinkdirectory

Its the most common directory system. Haven't used it myself but I imagine its straight forward, however you will probably learn some things about web building and development as you go along if you don't know any thing about it.

Good luck!

Thevdirectory listings on our site are tailored exactly to fit the company who registers and is fully personalised, it's good to be different.

Here is an example: http://www.smallbusiness-uk.org/chemistdirect.htm

Let us know when you get yours off the ground.

If your idea is just a General directory you will not make anything from it, and at best you may just cover the hosting costs, but I doubt even that.

People are wary of 'directories', there are hundreds started per month, by people with no idea of how to make them work. A directory by itself will NOT work, it requires a huge trigger to force it into people's minds and/or money.

You're very question shows your lack of knowledge of this, I advise you save your cash for a different idea.

I have just started to use DirectoryPress for WordPress, not free but very reasonable. Might be worth a look http://www.directorypress.net/

Exactly what I was going to recommend! Very nice system, with far more flexibility than phpld. Easier to use too.

Hi David and Ranks,

Thank you for the recommendation. I was looking into this yesterday and it does seem more 'user friendly'. I also like the fact that you only pay for 1 licence which can be used as many times as you like.

Are you both using this for your existing sites?

I've just started to use it for a client, we are just completing but the client loves it from what he has seen - and I must say I like it too. User friendly, professional and a simple install.

I have done but the site has had several redesigns since using it. Its nice to use though, mine was completely re-css'd to match my theme.

I think I will definatley consider this option.

I was just a bit apprehensive because of the relatively cheap cost and the fear that the background coding might not be good, leading to problems in the future. But if its working for you, then it should work for me.

Thanks
