I have a basic wordpress site and want to extend it to do other things.

I want to be able to allow people to register on the site. I also want people to be able to register and pay for attending an event using Paypal buttons. And I want to be able to send an email to the member list from within my wordpress admin and also view and manage the members registration and event booking details in there too. Is this possible with plugins? How much do you think it would cost or is it easy to add these in and set them up myself?

All thats possible with plugins, you'll want something like memberwing or wp-member, they are both ok. Its all possible with moderate wordpress knowledge, but you'll be looking at some theme modifications too, so a little html/php and some CSS.

When you say 'basic' are you self-hosting, or is your site on wordpress.com? If the latter, that narrows your options considerably.

yes, hosting it myself.

Also, when I say I want a member registration, they wont actually be registering to do anything on the site, nor is it paid, its just to collect member details of our group so we know who they are, and various other details we have collected. It's a private dog breeders group so the website isnt really for the public even though its on the inernet. We manualy collect this detail at the moment but it would be good if we could somehow collate all this information in one place linked to the website. We may charge in the future for membership but right now its too early to charge anything.

Ahh, ok, this one is really nice, used it a couple of times, easy to implement too.

• Registration is already built into the site, it just needs activating. "Settings > General".

As for paying - you could potentially add these buttons manually. Or there is a plug-in like this: "Events Registration (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/advanced-events-registration/)"

That would probably do what you need as it allows you to post your list of attendees.
If you're getting people to register, I would get the wordpress default login page customised to the rest of your site.
