To my shock when loading my site my home page
http://www.rosesbydesign.com/index.php
Just flickered onto a google page rank of 4!
Then when I went back to it it was 0 again.
Is this something to do with the google update?
If so, will being a PR 4 help in my listings?

Hmm doesn't appear to be a PR update at the moment.
To check your PR on various Google Data centers (databases to me and you) visit http://www.httppoint.com/seo_tool_pr.php
For your domain it is showing PR0 on all datacenters, what usually happens during an update, is you see some differences in the different datacenters.
With regard to improve in ranking, the simple untechified answer is no. A PR update now only happens a few times a year, so any links you have gained will have already made an impact on your rankings.
To be honest nowadays, the best thing to do is forget PR, and work on gaining good quality links for the keywords you are optimising your pages on.

A PR refresh started 4 days ago. Some websites awaiting a new PR however don't always see a PR change on each update as you can be skipped but then picked up on the next update. The PR of IBL's is directly related to your own PR factor.
PR is not especially related to rankings per se in Google as low PR sites can beat higher ones in rankings and vice versa. Where you buy your PR from is also important as Google does not always allow 'PR flow' from a higher PR site to a lower PR site if it has knowledge that the higher PR site is selling PR (a manual red flag).

Thanks Tin,
So PR is meaning less really?
Just a ranking based on links to you?

Google use an internal algorithm to calculte what sites rank where - this is called PageRank. However, the PageRank you see on the Toolbar and in these datacenter tools is a very superficial, trival version of the actual rank Google give your site. The PR displayed on the toolcar is updated very infrequently, something like once a year, whereas the internal value that Google actually uses is changing all the time.
As Tin said, sites with a low PR can rank at least as highly as sites with a greater PR in the SERPs - which is why I wouldn't really worry too much about what your PR is and concentrate on where your site really ranks when you search in Google.

No Mark. On-site seo is what gets page rankings. No seo? then it's solely down to links to get you the rankings but the trouble is that you need different text in those links which target different keywords which also target different pages and this is often out of your control when looking for inbound links in the first place. If you have a site consisting of 100 pages and you seo each page for a single but different keyword/phrase, you've got a high chance of getting to page 1 for every single targeted keyword as each page has already got 99 internal links to it, (although inbounds from different IP's work better) but trying to get inbound links to every internal page is a massive job if you are requiring unique link text from each external site to each of your internal pages. Directory links aren't of much use here as their guidelines most often stipulate that their link must point to your home page and not to internals. This is why it's extremely important to seo all pages, it's the only way to get maximum engine exposure.

What I dont understand is how so many of my internal sites are a PR4 yet my front page a 3!
This SEO info is all too complicated for me! Is Alexa not really relevant either?

I would like to point something out about google page rank.
Using one of the tools i saw mentioned earlier in this thread i checked the page rank for 2 of my domains.
www.homebusiness-no1.ws has about 40 pages ( approx) and about 400 inbound links. Page rank 3
ok all seems fine.
www.justcarsonline.co.uk ( have a look, what you see is what you get-ie logo and about 30 words max) page rank 2???
come on something must be broken somewhere??
