I have an on-line jewellery website and spend a significant amount of time trying to get new links to our site via variety of means. Part of our strategy is to find out what sites are linking to our competitors and then to link to these sites. However depending on which back link tool I use whether it be Alexa, Yahoo or just typing the competitors name into Google - I get a different list of sites.

How do I know which list of sites is the most reliable and also which list is giving me the sites of the best value in link terms (ie that the search engines will demm more valuable!!)

Any light shed on this would be fantastic!! :)

@OP, you don't use any single resource, you use many different resources, combine them then work on the cominied list after removing dumplicates.

http://uk.search.yahoo.com/

Type:

linkdomain:mysite.co.uk -mysite.co.uk

Obviously changing "mysite.co.uk" for your actual domain name. That way you don't track links from your own domain. :)

I didn't read the entire question sorry and now can't delete my irrelevant reply.

I have just been reading the June 21 entry on Google Webmaster Blog and thought it might have been useful
