OK, who is the guy who sells the theatre tickets as I can't remember his name! I have a possible referral of someone looking for 20 tickets! (for a small fee of course! lol)

I'm sure seeing as it's a business referral Lawrence wouldn't mind you dishing out his phone number and it is after all, probably available on his website. But if you were to give it out, wouldn't you be breaking some kind of data protection rule?
I wouldn't want you to be handing mine out without checking first.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Customer confidentiality should be something your company prides itself on.

Err... so why do you publish them on your website?

So what about word of mouth and referrals? The whole point of running a business is to get people to ring you isn't it? Don't think DP it really applies here but it doesn't matter as I've found him anyway.
thanks for all your input!

Are you saying that if someone mentions to me that they're after a painting for their new house, you don't want me to give them your number? I'm confused..... :? !!

I would never give out a number that is personal, or it that person wants me to keep it private.
I was just stating that I had the number is Anne needed it to pass him work. I have passed a lot of work between clients of mine and no one has ever had a problem with it.

Ok, I dont think people got what I meant. Of course I would not decline a referral, neither I'm sure would Lawrence. However although we all publish our numbers on our websites etc, it would be more professional to say to Anne that you would ask Lawrence to contact her rather than giving out the number willy nilly.
MK - The information you store of your clients is confidential and it is your responsibility as a company to keep it this way.

I just want to point out that I have not given out his number, or any other details.
On this forum there was someone looking for a particular person, I informed them that I had their contact details if they require them.
If someone I did not know sent me an e-mail requesting someone's details, then I would contact the other party first to make sure that this is OK, or let them get back in contact with them.
I did not have Lawrence's details to hand so I informed Anne that I could get them for her as I have indeed worked with him and I did his business cards.
I am well aware of the data protection act and I am not in breach of it. Informing someone that I know, that I have a person’s contact details that they are seeking, is not a breach of customer confidentiality.
I was just trying to help a trusted source pass on some work and I am sure that the recipient would have been very grateful.
I will not be contributing to this thread after this post.

This has all been blown well out of proportion. At no point did I ever accuse you of breaching the data protection act or tell you off in any way, I mearly pointed out that I would not openly advertise the fact that I was happy to give out telephone numbers.
It really doesn't matter. Just something to note for the future.
