Just browsing the stats on one of our sites and the though struck me that although its unique visitors is quite modest it has 500k page views per month.

So whats better page views or uniques.?

Unique visitors are the amount of people visiting the site. Page vies are the number of hits a page gets.

Eg I could look at 20 pages everyday on your site for a month. That'd be 600 page views, 1 visitor.

A very interested visitor; maybe one far more likely to convert than a one page hit wonder.

So, as Earl asked, which is better?

I can't answer that.

Earl will have his conversions, but in my opinion that'd be the case for a lot of high value retailers.

Just exploring the importance of page views in the SEO mix.

Most SEO focus on getting the maximum number of unique visitors whereas it may be more important to get the maximum page views.?

I remember reading are article ages ago about the stickiness of a site. The idea that people will either return or spend some time expeloring the site before picking up the phone or completing the sale.

I don't think there is a simple answer. You could for example have a high number of uniques and page views but low conversions.

On the other hand you could have a low number of returning visitors with a low page view score but high conversion rate.

I suppose it depends on what is one the pages. If each page is selling a product or a service I would want high page views. If it was just info not so important.

Anyway I would kill for 500k page views a month:)

Depends on the nature of the website, generally, I would be after uniques, more often than not, more uniques (in theory) will return a larger conversion ratio.

To add further:

Information Site: Page Views

Maybe "information site" is not the best description, more of a community/membership website, perhaps even a blog/forum. Returning visitors would prove much more rewarding for me and add more value long term than a larger unique visitors figure.

Ecommerce Site: Unique Visitors

A larger unique visitor figure for any website that is selling, or even a lead based website, is going to generally result in more conversions, there may be exceptions but generally, depending on industry/niche/product range, new customers will outweigh repeat customers.

Both are important it’s just important from which angle you will look in to it.
Information/community websites would look for more page views as this will bring better conversion (subscription) rates (if visitor reads many pages means that he finds information useful and more likely he will come back and/or subscribe).Ecommerce websites don’t need high page views and could be referred as negative conversion point (visitor takes longer to make his mind to buy product/service).
