Help Buying Domain Names

Hi

Looking for some info on purchasing domain names :)

Can anyone advise on anywhere that I can register private for both .com and .co.uk domain names.

I dont want my personal info available on a whois search.

.co.uk - anywhere. Speak to Rob at Matrixx, or just go to the link below. For .com, I've never seen anywhere that gives you that option, but don't hold me to that one.

Hmm we don't let people hide their details - and certainly on 'Trading' .co.uk's thats illegal - I suspect it is on .coms too.

Maybe try somewhere like www.godaddy.com they *might* have a whois privacy option.

I and quite a few others I know don't do business with companies that hide their details though so you may find if it's for a business site you may exclude a few 'geeks' which isn't the end of the world ;)

Ah and then theres Google - Google have filed patents to use whois info in their ranking systems. I don't think they use it at the moment but they could in the future.

godaddy have a privacy option for .com's and .nets etc but not for .co.uk

www.123-reg.co.uk allow UK WhoIs opt out on .co.uk domains (well, it's actually Nominet who allow the Opt Out as part of their rules for non-commercial dommains, but 123 give you a checkbox to take advantage of it).

I didn't think there was a similar opt-out system available for .com domains.

You can use a 'whois privacy' service for domain names, where the info listed in whois is a third party, however for legal reasons you cannot currently do so for .uk domain names.

While individuals can opt out of address display in whois, companies cannot do this, and .uk names misleadingly registered in such a way may be at risk of being detagged (i.e. made available for registration again). In reality you would probably get a slap on the wrist and be asked to use correct whois info though...

Only domain name holders that are non-trading individuals can opt-out of having their address details published. In other words, if you do not use or plan to use your domain name for business, trade or professional transactions you will be entitled to opt-out of having your address displayed.

Any website that is used for commercial purposes must have the address of the registrant opted in to the WHOIS service.

Nominet will automatically opt the address of the domain owner back into the system if they find that the site is commercial and there are many people on the internet who look out for people abusing the system and report it to Nominet.

I've been hounded by people wanting to sell me advertising from related websites. They have your name, address and telephone number.

A pain at times, especially when they phone at 3 am from the US!!

I dont mind having my name on there but I dont want my address showing. Thats what I currently have with my .co.uk which is up for renewal soon. Not sure if the rules have changed since I bought that originally?

I guess it's no different than having your address and telephone number on your website.

If you don't have an office address or you don't want your home address on there then maybe try a PO Box number or rent a postal forwarding address.

Is anyone buying the new .eu domain name for their site?

Also, any idea how much a po box number is, that has been mentioned to me before?

I always use ukreg.com and you can choose to opt out from the who is dbase. Not only that but you can get £30 worth of free google adwords vouchers as a new customer at the moment. Its a very simple easy to use interface and the prices are reasonable too.
