View Full Version : targeting memory cards or memory

I have been working on this website for quiet a while now. The new website will soon be launched and I am happy with the way things are going.
Here's the big issue.
I am trying to convince my client that its worth him targeting memory, memory cards.. etc.
He on the other hand has been told to target more simpler terms like 2gb memory cards. And before you say anything its been done. He is on page one for that term.
What he doesn't understand is that his website will appear on page one nearly everytime when you search anything to do with memory cards.
My point
Is it worth targeting main generic terms again.
I am finding singular terms are being ignored and pushed to one side because people automatically assume they are too difficult to do.
IMO: Optimising for generic terms make long tail terms easier to achieve.

2gb memory cards is already targetting "memory cards", as it forms part of the term in order, so i don't get what you are saying.
2gb memory cards
4gb memory cards
8gb memory cards
The above is 9 words in 3 phrases. if you build 100 links for all 3 of theose, then you are building
100 x 2gb
100 x 4gb
100 x 8 gb
300 x memory cards
so by pure natural weight of numbers, you are targeting the generic term.

Hi Ali - I agree with James here, purely because 'memory cards' is in the link etc it really doesn't if what is in front or behind it. Also I thing more people do search for exactly what they want too ie 16gb memory card, so I am sure it will be fine :D

Sorry for not being clear. I agree with what James is saying.
I have been pushing my client to do "memory cards" as opposed to "2gb memory cards"
Because I did it my way he now defaults the other terms.
What I was trying to point out was that it now seems like more people are trying to target long tail terms as opposed to targeting generic terms.
Also yes the multiple product pages will do ok but the here is a need for a generic page for all those pages to link back to.

While I agree it is worth targeting both, generic terms don't convert very well in my experience.
Maybe that's what he is getting at.

Yeah, but it will help him to get people who don't know what they are looking for. By this i mean if someone searches "phone memory card" he will appear for that and offer a solution.
While I agree it is worth targeting both, generic terms don't convert very well in my experience.
Maybe that's what he is getting at.

Thanks for that , it is very useful as I did not know
Here goes some link building on
white water rafting Scotland
white water rafting Morocco
white water rafting Nepal
We have 12 countries so should give us a nice mix with regards the content but all feeding a core term
Thanks:)

Yep, and don't forget to deep link whenever possible, as that way you get indented double listings as well

This is something i struggle to comprehend how to break up key words / phrases.
Surely the overuse of the word memory card will be slightly spammy?

He means to link directly to the pages i.e. link to the page for Scotland, not just to the home page.
There are two reasons: The page you are linking to is more relevant to the key words, and so will help maximise visibility in SERPS, and the the specific information page may start appearing in the search engines as an indented page or short link beneath the main page.
As long as there is at least one link from that details page back to the home page, both pages get a boost.

They would not be classed as spam because the of how term would be taken into consideration. The text would be dedicated to a page on which the product would be relevant.
