I understand the logic behind Google's update, displaying live results instead of outdated ones. On the surface it would appear to make sense.
Often search queries display results on page 1 that are very old. I do wonder however if people will just date stamp everything, the results will be relevant in terms of the date but the quality I'm not sure.
That said it is important nowadays for website owners to
1. Add good quality content on a regular basis, I recommend 2 sections
General articles, written in a manner that will lead to acceptance in Google News
Company news, more self promotional snippets
2. A social media campaign, ping is a versatile platform
3. Improve page load speed.

What impresses me about the update is the sheer scale of it and yet the 500+ rankings i check for my site daily have not shown any unusual fluctuations. A testament to the expertise of the Google engineers/coders.
"I understand the logic behind Google's update, displaying live results instead of outdated ones. On the surface it would appear to make sense. "
The logic behind the update is twofold - 1. To index the interwebs faster, bringing fresh results to the SERPs and a better user experience and 2. To lay the foundations for all Google services present and future.
With regards to number uno - I would not say that it is to show live results in particular, although they have of course been making modifications along those lines. But instead it is to index faster so that the delay between content being published and content being indexed is reduced.
On a different note - I hate the new homepage modifications and search results pages. What I loved about Google was the simplicity of it all, no clutter. Now I am starting to get clutter and it's starting to feel Bingish. :-(

Hi Mathew long time, I hope you are well
I agree with the indexing, they report they are carrying out a rolling daily index, I think the mass fluctuation occurred a month or so ago, when the index was all over the place. They may have adopted a staged roll out.
I also agree with the clutter aspect, I prefer the previous layout.
There has been a lot going on in a short space of time, the mayday update and now caffeine.

Whoa there cowboy, just looked at your links and realised who you are!
Hows the web business goin mate? :-)
I think it must have been a staged rollout a datacentre at a time, Matt Cutts lead us to believe it would be rolled out around January but this never materialised. Kinda ruins the excitement of it all though, was hoping for something radical and instead it "just works" Sigh... ;-)

Business is good, I gauge it on how I moan
Moan because I'm bored and there's not enough work or because I'm strapped and too busy. From the start of the year it's been the latter. How's it going your end?

Start of the year excellent - I think that's when everyone has lots of lovely advertising budget to spend. Now, slowing down a lot. Typical as i move house next week and it's costing a bomb! (and i should have saved of course instead of spend spend spend)
Can't complain too much though but wish I have more time for SEO, more clients = too busy with day to day operations where as I would rather be concentrating on rankings... Need a nice cheap admin person to deal with clients!

Sounds hectic mate
I'm currently living in Norway, early in the year I decided to build a wooden cabin in the mountains, not that we had a clue what we were doing. More luck than judgement the place actually looks fine, even the locals are impressed, possibly because we're brits and the place is still standing. I put the wife in charge of provisions. Come bill time turns out it cost double what I expected, great as we go to Florida in a few days time....such is life.

Living the dream huh? ;-)
I've been in a wooden lodge now for 11 months up in the highland wilderness, afraid we did not build ourselves though, not quite that adventurous yet! It's been lovely despite the mad winter however 5 kids + small wooden lodge = mayhem so looking forward to the large modern bungalow in the sticks for a bit.
Space to hide :D

Isn't it strange how quickly threads about google SERPs can turn into ones about wooden constructions in cold climates? I guess it happens all the time and something we'll have to live with. :D

I think people are reading a lot more in to this change than it actually deserves.
Rankings aren't suddenly going to change hugely and they aren't suddenly going to start being based around dates or the freshenss of the publishing date.
In terms of Googles technology it is revolutionary in terms of how quickly and in how much depth they index pages.
(Caffeine processes hundreds of thousands of pages in parallel. If this were a pile of paper it would grow 3 miles every second /geekfact)
So the amount of data that Google has increases dramatically, the number of pages in their index, the speed in which they can process this data, and the link graph that they can refer to becomes far more detailed and up-to-date, but in terms of rankings changes people won't notice much different.
