Can any of the learned SEO experts suggest good tools to check sites to see how well or not they have been optimised?

There are really not any tools that can give you this information. OK tools like webceo will run across a page, they will look at metrics like KW density, H1 tags etc, but that doesn't mean much these days.

SEO is about far more these days, density for example means nothing as semantic relevance of copy is more important. Anchor text again uses emantics.

'wedding gifts' for example a site can rank top without having that phrase as anchor text, providing it has wedding presents, bridal gifts, marriage presents, marriage gifts, bridal presents etc in the anchor text because they are all semantically linked. and as a result, show that the site appeals to a broad range of search terms in the eyes of those linking to it.

SEO automated checkers can only check pages, they don'ty check navigation or file structure, which is a major part of SEO.

So really the answer is no. But if you want something to play with, get IBP or WebCEO

Yeah, Google's a good tool for that. You type in a search term relevant to your business and if your site doesn't show up you probably have a problem.

LOL! (Some people may have missed the irony.)

... Some people may have missed the irony.

If they did, I doubt they would be any good at SEO.

There are two issues here - what's relevant and what customers want to see. Customers like reports and graphs n' shizz so I always use WebAuditor for that (it gives good info about pages and keywords etc) and for ranking I use Caphyon's Advanced Web Ranking which has lots of graphs.

For my own sites I just search on a Sunday morning while reading papers and eating me bacon sarnie.
