Hi there.
I have a question on behalf of my father.
He has been retired for a few years, so hasn't had any dealings with the tax man since then.

He's been offered a short consultancy contract which will be worth between £3-£6k, depending on how involved he wants to get.

Could anyone advise as to where he stands from a tax point of view? Will he have to do a tax return regardless of what he charges, or is there a threshold that he can earn without any need for doing a return?

He's of the opinion that if he has to start paying NI and doing tax returns, he'd rather just go fishing and watch the cricket!

Thanks in advance for any help

:)

All untaxed income must be declared on a self assessment - rules here:

He won't have to pay NI if he's over 65

He will have to do a tax return if he's self employed - there is no minimal threshold. Given the size of the contract it would probably be easier for the company to employ him.
