Just out of interest, if split testing some website text, what number of visitors per day would you need to make the test meaningful?

Well, running a split testing is not about tracking traffic it is also about tracking the behavior of the users. Take you time and go through all the details pertained to your testing before bumping on a conclusion. Remember that a wrong move can destroy your all chances of doing something great in your business circle.

It depends on your conversion rate and the difference in conversion rates between the 2 versions.
For example, if you have a lead gen page that does 15% and the other version is doing 25%, it won't take long. (120 visitors would do it.)
On the other hand, if the percentages were 12% and 15%, it would take much longer. (You'd need about 1,000.)
If the percentages were 2% and 2.5% (same ratio as above), you'd need around 6,000.
Hope this helps,
Steve

It does help Steve, thanks. Quoting you above, in simple terms does this mean if I normally get 2 orders for every hundred visits, I need 6000 visits to make the testing worthwhile?

If the new version is going to get you 2.5 orders per 100 visits, then yes.
If it's going to get you 4 orders per 100 visits, you'll need far fewer.

It depends on what you're driving the traffic to.
Though you'll really want to be judging it on the highest amount of visitors possible.
EDIT: How much traffic can you get? The more the better.
