We're taking on one or more employees from a school in the area as part-work experience, part-oddjobbers (e.g. new website coming up which needs a lot of content organising and porting over).

I just have a few questions about how employing a 16/17 year old is different from employing an 18+

Are they legally able to sign a contract?

Do we pay the same national insurance contributions; is the PAYE process the same?

Is there any other information I should know?

Thanks guys!

lots of info here

you need to do specific risk assessments - not allowed to work with dangerous equipment etc

Depending on their age - you may have to get written permission from parents / school and local education dept.

with regards to PAYE - I doubt they will earn enough to warrant this (unless you are a very generous employer:D) - so you just get them to complete a p46 - you can download one from the HRMC website. Other than that - everything else is the same.

every council varies slightly with regards to the regs surrounding work experience - so check first

If you get stuck - pm me I might be able to help further

Kind Regards
