I started plastering the ceiling in my hallway about 8 months ago and have never got around to finishing it - can you send someone over to tidy it up for me please?

OK - I've got a serious question, related to "career coaching".

When I handed my notice in at my last job, my boss asked "What can we do to persuade you to stay?" - and I replied "nothing, I've already accessed another offer".

What should I have said? What would have been a reasonable request? I'm thinking a tax-free lump sum, about £10k. Would I get laughed out of the building?

Depends how desperate they are to keep you.

If you've already got something else lined up anyway, what have you got to lose?

Just put your cards on the table - make it clear why you're leaving, outline the benefits of the new position and tell them if they can match or better the offer, you'll consider staying - that's if you want to stay, of course! If you can't stand the job, sometimes it's worth taking a cut in pay/benefits to move on to something you enjoy.

Referencing the plastering, I know you were joking but in all seriousness, I can sort someone out to come in and finish the job, liaise with them etc - but then, I suppose, if you've got time to be posting on here, you've got time to make a few quick phone calls!

Thank you for a serious answer to a couple of silly questions!

Personally I reckon the HR department would s**t themselves if someone asked for £10k, but that's the downside of having an HR department!

I hope you stick around on the forum, as there is some very good advice dispensed here - and we try and have a luagh too!
