Has anyone got any experience of these laptops? I have had mine for over a year now and all of sudden it closes itself down, I think it overheats. Now it is on for a long time, normally from about 7.30 in the morning till whatever time I turn off of an evening. Is this normal for a laptop to do, does anyone know of any problems with this make?

Thanks

Toni

Hi Toni

I have two Toshiba laptops and the oldest one had an overheating problem. I bought it at PCWorld and it was still under warranty so they arranged for it to be collected, cleaned and returned - all took about a week.

Hi Lynn

Thanks for replying. Is it just a years guarantee they come with?

I have been looking around and it seems a couple of people have had the problem. I have changed the power settings now to see if that helps and I will also get one of the sprays to clean out as that is recommended as well.

laptops are not generally designed to be on for long periods, something i also keep forgetting.
These are extremely compact units which overheat very quickly. Though they are designed to sit on ones kneee etc hence the name. you should also take note of the ventilation holes at the rear, part near the fan. These need to be kept clear so cool fresh air can circulate the device.

I had an advent from pc world that simply burn't out i wonder if this is why

I've a Dell Laptop, which is inly a month old.

I'm having problems when I click on standby it turns off. I then press on the keyboard to switch it on again and the system appears on but the screen is still blank.

I then have to hold down the power key to turn if off then on again. - weird!

Lisa that could be in your actual settings of your laptop where you can change the function of the standby key to different things.

but of course as they became larger and hotter, they adopted the name "notebook" instead. I know a long story about htat but wont go into it. Depending on the machine in question, as mentioned, it may well have a fan underneath and be designed to sit on a flat surface with the feet providing some clearance for air to be drawn in.
That said, unless it specifically states "not to be used for longer than x" - which I doubt, then I wouldnt be too concerned. One thing to be aware of, if you plan on taking out an extended warranty, is that it is highly unlikely that the battery will be covered.

it doesnt turn off! it goes into standby! check your power management settings. That said, what is your reason for putting it into standby? a lot of people seem to do this for no known reason, standby is basically running on very low power - just enough to keep it alive in laymans terms - so that when you "turn it back on" it fires up in an instant. it is still using battery power and can sometimes cause a problem if the battery dies whilst on standby. I personally very rarely use it, but hibernate instead.

Since I changed the power options it seems to be working so much better. I think that maybe the settings I had were just too much for it considering how long I have it turned on!

My older Toshiba Equium (the one that had to go away to be cleaned under guarantee) needs to be propped up at an angle to assist the air circulation. My newer one is ok, so far, but then it is only 6 weeks old.
