I stumbled across this guy's website the other day actually...

This was the first time I had ever heard the name so he's not particularly well known in the UK SEO industry as far as I am aware...

Actually he is fairly well known. He runs Impact Media who are among the decent SEO companies (as I'm sure you're aware most are useless or sharks).

And I wouldn't give such a recommendation if it weren't true as he's in direct competition with my company The Optimizers.

Anyway, his company are SEMPO members, they're ethical, won some awards, and he's done a book on the fundamentals of SEO.

Actually, I did think that to myself when the name cropped up but when back tracking my steps, I couldn't figure out an association between his personal site and Impact Media so I assumed I must have been mistaken.

I retract my previous comment then in that case.

While not exactly a legend; he has written a couple of reasonably good seo books.
I met him about a year ago and thought he was a decent guy.
