HMRC have published that "70% of SME businesses ... have representation" and that "20% of such agents do not have a professional qualification and are not subject to monitoring by the main professional bodies".

OK, not all companies will come into the SME category, but given that there are currently 2.75m UK companies, the 30% that are not represented could be as many as 825,000 and the 14% that are using firms without a professional qualification could be a further 385,000.

I was very surprised that the numbers were this high.

I'm not - especially on the bit about firms without a professional qualification.

Anyone can call themselves an accountant as I have been known to say many times before.

And there are many who give advice as though they are an accountant with little / no knowledge of the subject matter.
