This is for a client.
I installed the router and got the internet working but I can't get the wep encryption enabled, it is supposed to be enabled and has a key but the network adaptor connects to it without asking for a key.
The other problem is another laptop connects to it and can ping google but both firefox and IE can't seem to find the card despite all the network settings being correct. This laptop is plaqued with spyware though :( so maybe that is causing the problem.

if you enabled WEP (i'd suggest WPA over wep) on the router, the client may well SHOW as connected, but not be connected as such, is the router setup as a dhcp server? what IP's are the clients getting? when you connect, does it take ages?

sorry, in a rush, forgot to say, did you try initially with no encryption? I would initially then go from there

It has no encryption at the moment so I said its fine if you trust your neigbours and use the don't use the wireless connection for any important transmissions.
Laptop B works fine with no encrpytion
Laptop A can ping the web and shows up as working but Firefox and IE cannot access the web despite it all being setup correctly.
Also it is setup as DHCP but I also tried it manualy with no luck.
I am thinking of swapping it for a Netgear and just learn from my mistakes. I have never had any problems with Netgear stuff I normaly use.
The router in question is the D-LINK DSL-G604T

Havent try D-Link but tried a few others and Netgear was by far the best I found.

Have you downloaded the latest firmware?

No not yet. To be honest I am at the end of my tether with it, I have setup Netgears in 15 minutes so I think I will just buy a Netgear router and sell the D-LINK on ebay.
I won't loose any money but it is a lot of hassle but I need to really look after this customer as I have had quite a bit work already from them.

Please do. I also do a bit of IT work on the side and I have configured D-Link. Best to upgrade first. Use a shared key instead. Simpler.

ok
forget firmware updates, the router will work as a router with the firmware it is shipped with, an update may fix other problems such as locking up after a certain time.
The fact that laptop B can get online wirelessly indicates the router is working. If laptop A can ping a known host and get a reply that would also indicate the router is working, the fact that laptop B can get web pages but laptop A can ping a host but not resolve would indicate initially either a dns problem or a browser problem.
on Laptop A, open a browser window and in the address bar put http://66.102.9.99/ (note no www)
on laptop A, fo an ipconfig /all and confirm the dns details are correct (of in doubt, compare to laptop B which is working)
It has no encryption at the moment so I said its fine if you trust your neigbours and use the don't use the wireless connection for any important transmissions
and what about the little *** from across the road? or someone just passing by, if it were me, I would have advised to leave the router unplugged until I had secruity on.

Please dont take offence, but by that comment it would indeed indicate that you do do "a bit" of IT work.
a shared key is indeed simpler, it is also simpler to go to bed at night without locking the door or setting the alarm.
