Hi there,

as Im sure some of you are aware of, there are companies and database searches whereby you can purchase business addresses in database format for the use of contacting prosepective customers.

As my business is new, I have spent a couple of hundred pounds on these and also types thousands of addresses myself into Microsoft Access Tables for the mail-merges and labels for envelopes.

Would it be permisable to offer these databases of mine to others in exchange for their similar information on UK businesses for the purpose of marketting.??

If we all did this, we could accumulate a massive list of prospective customers with much less effort than if we were to do it alone.

Comments please,

Jon. http://www.oakappliancetesting.co.uk/images/tu.gif

I think you can only do that if the person has agreed to receive similar offers from other companies. I wish I knew where some companies got my name from. I sign up for nuthin'.

I get my info from directories such as yellow pages, yell.co.uk or other advertising areas like that... the information is out there in the public so thats how I get my customers...

Im not just going to advertise myself and wait for customers to come to me, as in my game most business owners don't even know what PAT Testing is, let alone that its required by law to be done.

Not only that, once you've advertised with a company directory like above, they then sell your information to other people who need marketting info on UK businesses, such as the Thomson Local Directory and www.BusinessSearch.co.uk (http://www.BusinessSearch.co.uk)

You would probably get away with it but would be breaking the terms under which you bought the information. They include a few 'dummy' addresses usually to check up on usage.

aAso, taking info from yellow pages and yell.co etc is against their terms and conditions too and breaking their right to the info - these are commercial lists not public. But again, pretty much everyone does it!

Yikes.... thanks for the legal info.....

did I say I actually use those sources of info for advertising..... what I meant to say was that I was considering using them....

the offers still open if anyone wants to trade

"ahem" :oops:

Like I said, people do this sort of thing all the time, but no doubt a few do get scuppered for it. Just be aware of the possibilities.
