i have a client who borrows a commercial vehicle to go to work in. he puts in his own fuel in when he uses it. can he claim for the fuel he has put in, rather than mileage as it is not a personnal vehicle purely business use only.

I think that if he just uses the vehicle for the journey to work this would be classed as private use.
Does he use it to travel to different locations, ie; working on site?.
If so, I would have thought he should be keeping fuel receipts and as he isn't the owner of the vehicle it may be a good idea to make a note of the mileage readings on the receipts.
Hope that helps.

John.

he uses the vehichle to different places of work as he dosent have a van of his own. he hasnt recorded any mileage, only a pile of receipts have been given to me, can i just add them all up as an allowable expense.

Sounds fair to me. As he is using the vehicle to travel to various places of business then he can claim the cost of the petrol.

I agree, as he's using the vehicle to travel to different locations, I don't see any problem with using the receipts.

I would use them as a business expense, if he is not putting a mileage charge in, I would say its ok, if it is enabling him to make a taxable profit
