This might be the stupidiest question I have ever asked:), but here goes.
Is it possible to have 2 mobile numbers on one phone?
And how would you go about it?
Or even 2 numbers on the same landline?

Twin sims is the easiest way Jelly3.
It all depends on what phone you have tho.
Not quite sure if the latest phones take them.

I will be buying either the IPhone, a Blackberry Curve or the HTC Desire for work purposes/email.
I just cannot make my mind up, I was thinking of buying two seperate ones, but wondered if there was another option. It is probably easier to keep hold of one than it is 2. I am getting forgetful.:)

Jelly3, almost all the mobilephone made in China support dual sims. Of course, I won't recommend them. Seems that is quite easy, but depends on your mobile phone.
Actually I also have this questions, I have the HTC Hero, but I don't think it could carry 2 Sims. So I have to bring two phones all the time.

2 numbers on the same landline is possible - you get one ring for one number and another for the second line.
The easiest way to get 2 numbers on one mobile is to divert number 2 to number 1 - but of course you do have the problem of which phone bill records the outgoing calls and the cost comes off that allowance.
T-Mobile used to do multi-sim and I think Vodafone used to have somethign similar as well. Might be worth a punt with there Customer Service people?

I'm no expert but depending on why you need 2 numbers you could have a voip account and simply have the calls diverted to your mobile? A cost effective way possibly.
Just a thought

This is likely to be my option.
I already have a VOIP account.

The technical answer is Yes, GSM supports more than 1 mobile (dig down in some phones you'll see Voice, Fax & Data numbers can be specified)
Very few providers implement the full spec though :(

If you have VOIP account you can choose that option or you can buy a phone which can hold 2 sim cards and you have 2 numbers in one phone.
