Hi all,
I have been sent a zip file of buttons to put on a client's site, but everytime I try to open it, Windows says it has blocked the file because it may be unsafe. I have followed instructions to unblock it, but then get the same message. Can someone let me know how to open these files?
Cheers,

Have you tried right clicking and saving to your c drive then try extracting it again.

Anne makes a good point which people can often overlook. Another thought is if the file has a double extension by mistake ie; forum.zip.zip which can sometimes happen in error. Windows may be seeing this and kicking up a fuss over it. If you have a double extension then simply rename the file using one extension only so... forum.zip.zip becomes forum.zip.

Trust that's as clear as mud

Do you mean OUTLOOK EXPRESS rather than windows?

if so, did you try (from in outlook express) tools/options/security, take tick out of "do not allow attatchments to be saved or opened blah blah"
click ok and restart outlook experss.

that should work, but it seems odd that it has blocked a zip file. You could try renaming as suggested above.

yup, downloaded it to C drive, tried renaming it, checked extensions, clicked the 'unblock' box in properties... no joy.

Hi

Ok, have you looked at the file size (ie; if it says 0bytes) this could suggest it's corrupt which might be the problem. Have you tried repairing the file, there's plenty of software around to do this?
If all else fails and the contents of the zipped file are NOT confidential you could email it to me and I'll take a peep and see it it's sortable then email it back.
That's all I can think of other than asking the sender to resend you the attachment.

I think Tin has a good point, one thing no one seems to have picekd up on is the fact it is just one file, or does it happen to all attatchments? If its just the one, then do as he/she suggests and have them resend it.

It is quite possible the file has a hidden extension. Quite often a file can appear to be 'filename.zip' whereas the actual filename is much longer, such as 'filename.zip ******************* .scr' or something similar. These are normally viruses, and the idea is that all the spaces before the actual extension will hide all of that from the user so it appears (at a glance) to be an innocent filetype, even though it is not. If this is the case, count yourself lucky that the computer has blocked access to this file for you.
