If you google Coventry Electrician Click this (http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&source=hp&q=coventry+electrician&meta=&aq=f&aqi=g1&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&fp=a3412f17c792c95) you will see Sparx Electrical at the top of the business listings.
Its been like this for about a year, that site is always number 1 unlike others which move up and down every other week.
Just wondering how he is doing this - especially since his site is very basic and amateur http://tinylink.com/?lXZM5JtAqE

Hes not in the proper listings. What you are seeing is simply a Google Map Result, you can add your site to Google Maps too.

I would also be interested.
If you Google my company's name, and our geographical location, we are H on the map, yet we are in the centre. Businesses 3 miles out of the area appear higher in the rankings than we do, businesses not even in the area Googled!

He is in the centre of Coventry and nobody else is - which would make sense if the ranking was based on proximity to the location specified.
TBH, I don't know really -I understand how organic rankings work but the local results are a complete mystery to me - the odd results I have seen are very spammy.

Who's B&F?
What about JuggleFrogs - who the frog are they?

Who's B&F?
B = Electricians and plumbers Coventry (24/7 Call Out) Ltd
F = Jugglefrogs
If you look at the map B & F are in the city centre - A (Sparx Electrical) are quite far out from the city centre

It does make you think, that site in position A is awful,
They dont even have any reviews either,

:) I see - funnily enough there is a B&J
Where do you come in the non-spam organic listings then - any chance of some improvement there?

You may want to read this advanced optimisation for Google Maps listings (http://www.clubnetsearchmarketing.co.uk/advanced-optimisation-google-local-business/261) article I have posted on here a few times.
It explains how to improve your ranking and is likely to be what your competitor in #1 spot has applied to stay at the top of the business listings.
