Hi All and to marketing experts,
I have just started my own business - Payroll Excel and now need to start marketing the business.
I have a website, which is i guess a good start.
We basically offer payroll service to SME's and wondered if anyone had some bright ideas around marketing it. I have alrady though about leaflets and press releases.
Can others recommend anything else that may capture the imagination?
Thanks

It's all about strategy. What is the compelling reason for potential customers to buy from you? Marketing is simply conveying your value proposition in a powerful way to your target audience. Classical business theory claims there are only two possible strategies: low cost leader or differentiator. Which do you want to be?
Once your strategy is in place, then you can worry about ideas for marketing.

Are you looking for local companies or working nationally? In any specific sector? I know it is tempting to want to work for anyone anywhere but all it means is that you spread yourself too thinly and your marketing is weakened. It is better to pick a couple of specific targets and throw everything at them then scatter a few bits here and there at random.
Once you have built up a customer base of one kind, then you can look at expanding into another type.

Thanks for the advice
I am starting locally to start with - I feel there are a lot of businesses in the area that could benefit from my services such as lower costs, benefits from the Inland Revenue and the client area on the website.
I will take you advice on board. I guess networking is very important, something I have not really htough about
Thanks

As you are a start up yourself, it would be good to target others in your situation (but obviously without your knowledge!). Check out local networking and training events for your area (see Business Link for events or try googling) and like Guy said, network like mad.
Also try getting in touch with local enterprise agencies and business centres to see if they'd be prepared to refer you or stock some leaflets/business cards for you.
Hope that helps a bit.
Oooh, I just forgot my favourite - write a press release and send it to your local papers and business publications!! PR is King!!
