Does anyone know what the latest news is on the situation with the worldwide shortage of Cisco ASA Firewalls (in particular Cisco ASA 5505) ? I have spoken to several suppliers who all show 'Awaiting Stock' and they cannot seem to tell me anything other than 'we are expecting them by June'.

I am told that the manufacture delay has been caused by an international shortage of a raw material which is used on all ASA products. I would have hoped Cisco had a contingency for such an issue but if there is no alternative at the moment then I guess we are stuck waiting.

If anyone has any news on this situation please let me know.

Thanks,

Simon

I had heard about this too, we have 30 running across the WAN and will soon be needing more too!

The shortage started back in January when their very large warehouse full of stock in China went up in smoke.

Same boat as the rest of the industry, you've got to work hard to source any Cisco kit at the moment, and some gits have whacked the prices right up, in some cases over list because of the constraint. :(

It is a worldwide shortage of this product. Essentially, Cisco has not produced new firewalls for quite some time! Apparently a supply problem on a Cisco ASA electronic elements is the cause of these delays in production. Not many details, but the problem concerns all of Cisco's global market.

Have you tried hardware.com, they can usually source the ASA's. Their refurbished gear isn't to bad too.

Last time I spoke with Hardware.com they were sourcing from C2K (http://www.computer2000.co.uk/). ;)

Dear Simon

Cisco's problems are allegedly down to the fact that they closed down a number of factories when they expected a world wide recession. This isn't going to be resolved in the sohrt term. We have clients with lead times of up to 28 weeks for new equipment.

I supply refurbished Cisco to some pretty big "hitters" in the UK. All genuine equipment guaranteed and with 24 months warranty which is a damn site more than Cisco offer unless you take the support packages.

Refurbished Cisco kit is often available right now and this is why it's often commanding a premium in the current climate. Companies such as C2K and Hardware.com can quote prices all day that look good, but when you ask WHEN you're getting your kit, things can sometimes go south rapidly.

"I've got it cheaper than anyone else, but you can't have it for weeks" is pretty pointless when you need it there and then.

If you want some quotes please drop me a PM and we'll touch base.

Kind Regards

Jon
