I have clicked on a few different links to google search, and depending on which you click you get different results, can anybody explain this?

search results are now tailored to your search history and location

Yes, as above. The results returned by Google are influence by your previous search history, and particularly, by your searches in a specific browser session.

To disable the customised searches, do a search for anything on Google, when the results show click on Web History on the top right of the page, and click disable. If it says Enable then it is already disabled.
Being signed in to Google is also customised differently to not being signed in, so you need to sign in to Google and do the same steps I mentioned above if you don't want your searches to be customised to you.

Yes I was aware that they are tailored if you dont turn off personalisation, but even then and if you clear your browsing history, you still get different results from different google search sites. If you enable 'in private' browsing they are also different.

Yeah it's different for in private browsing, and for all your different browsers, plus I've noticed that if I use my laptop at a friends house, then it resets the personalisation to enabled again which I then have to disable, then when I go back home I need to reset it to disabled yet again. This is annoying, especially for people who don't know about customised searches, and think they are higher in Google than they actually are and wondering how they are getting no traffic.

Yep! I was one of those people, I saw my site moving up the listings and thought 'great' then I realised that my hits werent going up so it made me think.
So, I tried a search on the lappy and got totally different results!
I have depersonalised my search and deleted my browing history, and now I think I am getting closer to 'real results' but when I go onto different google search pages, like google uk (not with UK search ticked) I get different results from the search box in my browser. If I enable 'in private' I get different results again

You also need to bear in mind the localisation aspect and that your search can be hitting different data centres. In truth though, if the result you get is fluctuating that much then your true position is quite weak.
