Would you sell your business if asked?

I think the answer for most people would be yes, if the price is right.

I think a lot of us feel that our businesses haven't reached their full potential yet so wouldn't command the price tag we think it deserves based on potential.

That's my thoughts anyway : )

It's what I do - buy and sell companies. And I can tell you that every single company is for sale. Needless-to-say, it all comes down to "price".

I like my business and I like my staff.

My main concern about selling it would be what happens to the lovely people who work for me?

Steve,

Your post reminded me of Richard Gere in Pretty Woman!

Have you got an accountant called sticky? (Or was it stucky).

:-)

Trust me - the buyer, ahead of the deal, will say whatever he thinks you want to hear. After the deal's completed, and the company's his, he can do whatever the hell he wants with (what was) your company.

As such, when selling a company there's no point in even emphasising your concern about this or that. Obviously this is different if there's some element of earn-out, but even then after that the ompany's no longer yours!

I am a softare developer and am currently trying to market several licenses to operate on line. I just want to write good software for a living not get tied up in lots of marketing.

Of course, if the price was right I would sell.

But the price would be high as I get such a buzz from running rosesbydesign.

I would miss it!

I've been asked 3 times if I wanted to sell Worldwide Holiday Homes but the thought of starting all over again with another business puts me right off.

It would have to be enough money that I can buy a holiday home abroad, and go travelling for a year or two!

I forgot to mention, although the questions was "will you sell if asked" - I definately actively market the business for sale as soon as turnover and profit warrants a sale of above a million.

(the figure of a million could be pushed back as it nears, but right now thats my target figure).

Every business, as mentioned above, is for sale if the price is right.
I've had a total of 9 enquiries on my company, and each time I have declined (well actually the last one is still on the table) because nothing has been enough for me to justify walking away from something I really enjoy doing, and just as importantly to me and SillyJokes what will happen to my staff?
One company that approached me said "Everyone has their price, we just need to find yours."

Ouch! My pride would take over there. An agent presenting that sort of attituded to me would NEVER find my price. I'm a firm believer in principles being our greatest asset. Sure, it's cost me before - but I still felt on top!!
Cheers, Nigel

I couldn't sell my business, as I am the business.

However, I could sell out the rights to some of my work.

For example, there's some marketing I put together for a profit share rather than a fee. I could sell the future profits from those back to the client.

One company that approached me said "Everyone has their price, we just need to find yours."

I don't think that's necessarily rude. It depends on the tone. For example, they might just mean that they’re highly motivated to “quote Ozzy happy”.

It was said tongue in cheek :D
I work very closely with this company and we have the sort of relationship where we do joke and wind each other occasionally.
