Hi all,

Registered as self employed about a month ago and finally got something through the post.

I require to make a payment of £14.40 for National insurance Contributions Fee.

I want to set up a DD with them but when trying to register online i require a UTR which is not mentioned on my letter.

Advice please?

Thanks.

Your UTR is your - Unique Tax Reference number, this is usually detailed at the top of any correspondence from HMRC.

If you check a letter from HMRC that you've received previously about your registeration for self employment, it'll be detailed on that.

Kind Regards

Neil

Call you local tax office and ask them. You will need your NI number to hand.

Not sure on this but if you have never filled in a self assessment form before it might that they have never issued you a UTR.
One of the beanies may confirm though.

The Inland Revenue dont send out and correspondance when you register as self employed. They did do a few years back but not now.

As they will be sending out the Tax Returns for the 5th April 2010 shortly, you UTR will appear on the front page, normally in the top right corner and is 10 digits long.

I would suggest paying the first NI bill by cheque or cash at post office or your bank and then once you have the UTR number, then set up the DD.

You will get the an NI bill each quarter.

Alternatively you can phone the Inland Revenue and have your NI number and personal details to hand, but I dont think they will hand over that info on the phone any more and may put it in writing to you.

It's been a while since I set up a s/emp DD but I didn't think you needed a UTR to do it. I seem to recall you can do it over the phone at the NIC office?
