Is it me or does anyone else hate the annoying chat pop-ups on hosting websites? I have been looking around sites for a reseller package and a few I have looked at have an annoying chat pop-up. If I wanted help, I would click the chat button or ring them.

Yep totally agree, to me it almost seems like they are too desperate for you to talk to them :)

Another affirmative from me too.
However it is possibly due to you being a discerning buyer, and not an ignoramus.
A similar scenario exists in Bricks & Mortar retail outlets.
If I walk into an electrical shop to buy a TV, I look at the aesthetics of the physical unit, its features, its interfaces, the picture quality and try to visualise it in my living room or study.
It takes time for me to evaluate the permutations, and last thing needed is for this evaluation phase to be interrupted by some sales assistant, who would not appreciate my decision making methods.
When left with two or three alternatives, only then would I ask him/her for input.
If my dear old mother walked in, she would require help from the outset as not a technically discerning buyer, but even then would still appreciate a few mins of familiarisation time with the surroundings. Perhaps being a woman , she would be able to multitask better and converse with the sales assistant while watching the demo films.

As an operator within the hosting industry, I can throw in my opinion on the matter.
Here at Netwise Hosting we actively monitor site visitors. If we identify a visitor who persitently lands on the same page and is clearly evaluating our hosting solutions over a period of days, we will invite them into a chat to ensure they are ok and understand everything in full.
Other than these personal invites, our chat system is entirely passive with no forward attempts made to bring site visitors into a conversation with our sales team.

I was on Sky.com once and I was straight away confronted with a chat box with a real person and couldn't get rid of it! All I did was shut off the website and that was the end of it.. it felt like I was being stalked, didn't like it one bit.
I guess the best thing to do is a courtesy small bubble at the corner of the screen say "Don't forget we're available to chat if you need any assistance" appear for a few seconds. That I'd be happy with..

You don't pounce on people as soon as they arrive on your site. You only contact them when you feel they are ready, like a sales assistance in a shop.

Fully agreee - should be a nice button to click when you "want" to chat. It's not just hosting companies that do it either. if I want further help i'll ask, don't badger me!
