Hi All
This might be obvious to most of you. What influence does a signature link from the UKBF's site have on my site? Is it a good one to have? What else can the members tell me (and us other novices) about the benefits of a link from this site. Excuse my naivety..
Thanks,
Jay

every link counts. In terms of SEO your anchor words help you to rank higher for those words. If you are very active around here then you might get some hits from forum visitors who might end up buying your stuff. So every link is important.

Thanks Nenad
I knew it counted for sure, just looking for some info on how potent it was.
Thanks again,
Jay

Yes - thanks for asking that Q - I was wondering that myself, but had forgotten to ask!:)
Does it mean when you post replies you're creating any kind of backlinks? (If so I think the £36 is something of a snip...)

Put it this way
you are not here just because you are expecting to get business from forum members/visitors. Your paid membership allows you to post a link in your sig. Now, how you use that link and what keywords you use is up to you. I would change the words in your link to something that people actually search for on google, you know better than me what your potential clients will search for so try to optimize your link. hope that helps

To be 1000% honest with you Nenad, my only reasons for being here are to get some help and to give help and encouragement where I can. I only in the last few days realised I can put a signature link. Now I know I can, I have done so and would like to know the strength of this link, as Im sure other amateur diy seo types would..
As far as I know, I did put my heaviest searched terms in there.. I think.
Cheers,
Jay

A sig link from UKBF might have 0.0001% greater influence than a sig link on the 'myfavouritetoy' forum but it's still going to have the same SEO value as a gnat's nadgers.
On the other hand, offer good advice and be helpful and it can generate a lot of new business.

Thats what I wanted to know.

What he said :D
Forum signature links, whether from UKBF or any other forum have extremely little value or effect to your SEO. However, depending on how you post and the sort of answers that you give, your signature can bring you plenty of business.
I have deliberately opted for "No follow" links in my signature to ensure that Google et al do not count my sig links.

Thank you Ray
Can I ask your reasons for the no follow?

Like I said, I believe that forum links in general hold little value for SEO purposes, topped with the fact that being a Moderator I tend to post in a variety of different topics which are not relevant to my website.

What influence does a signature link from the UKBF's site have on my site?
The first page of this thread has about 170 links on it, of which a single post's signature link might be one of those links. The prominence of this thread is also short lived, it is a few clicks away from the home page now, but in a week, a month or a year's time it will be less prominent, many clicks away from the home page - today's newspaper tomorrows chip paper.
So on the grand scale of things, forum signature links do not have much SEO value. If they are on pages which are not relevant to your website's targeted terms then they offer even less value. If you've posted thousands of posts, then thousands of the same signature link from the same website are not going to provide much SEO value either.
But sometimes they can provide a little value, and they can still drive traffic to your site from real website visitors. If you are on a relevant forum regularly talking about relevant things, relevant as in relevant to your website and services, then signature links should help both in an SEO sense (a little) and in a driving relevant traffic (a lot).
Advice you give on a forum is not only picked by the people (members and lurkers) reading the forum at the time the advice is given, but it may be picked up by people googling for such advice in the future too, they find the forum, your posts, and if they like what they read, they might want to contact you or visit your website.
One other thing to mention, is the link in the popup menu when you click on the member name link top left of the post, the "visit member's homepage" link, which is also a link which google might pick up (even for free members and spammers, Sift take note!), and also useful for real visitors.

Signature links were devalued in Sept 2003. :)

People in general, should think about their reliability and then SEO, not in other way round.
just a thought..

I think, signature links can be classed as blog spam, which is a negative seo effect,
im not sure though.

Yes but I edited my post :D
By the way, do you know that your forum link is no followed
They would still be relevant to the anchor text in your sig!
But most times completely irrelevant to the thread topic.:D

By the way, do you know that your forum link is no followed
Do you mean all sig links on UKBF are made to be 'no follow'? -
If so, then why the following statement?
I have deliberately opted for "No follow" links in my signature to ensure that Google et al do not count my sig links.
If all UKBF sigs are already 'no follow' then you didn't have to 'deliberately' opt for anything!
Do you mean all sig links on UKBF are made to be 'no follow'? -
No, I didn't say that, I said that the link in your sig to your forum is "no follow", your other one is "do follow".
All links automatically default to "no follow" if you are a free member but if you are a full member you have a choice. (A bit of poetic justice for those who vainly come here simply to leave what they think will be a nice little link for Google).
If all UKBF sigs are already 'no follow' then you didn't have to 'deliberately' opt for anything!
Next time you create a post, explore the icons at the top of the wysiwyg, the one at the right hand end will give you "no follow" links.

Thank you for that :) so how do you make a link 'do follow' in your sig? sorry if I'm being dim

Probably the best way is to undo the link to your forum and start again and be sure to click the insert link icon above the box, it's the little blue globe with a chain link symbol.

Forum links definitely do help in boosting rankings with search engines like yahoo and bing, but google has wised up to this and does not give that much value to them
