Has anyone else noticed that when you edit a post sometimes it appends a message to the post indicating that it has been edited but other times it doesn't?

It can be a bit frustrating because if I know the message is going to be there I will put an <EDIT> comment explaining my actions. Sometimes I have done this and the "edit" message does not appear.

Can't say I've noticed it.
But then my mistake-free posts have never needed editing!

If you edit your post and no-one replies have been posted then the forum does not leave a message that it has been edited. However, if you edit your post and there have been at least one reply then the forum will leave a one line message saying it has been edited. This is to prompt other posters to re-read your post.

OK?

Yes that makes sense.
